Effects of the wrong kind of sitting

The wrong kind of sitting can lead to all kinds of physical ailments.

Slouching in a chair or on the sofa puts our backs under excessive strain. This is because the natural curvature of the spine is not supported in this posture. After a while, sitting like this can lead to various unpleasant ailments, to a lesser or greater degree.

For example, backache, muscle ache and pain in the joints, trapped nerves or arteries, but also skin and tissue irritation, digestion problems and even breathing difficulties. What’s more, adopting such a posture will make it more difficult to get up out of the chair, leading in turn to a greater risk of falling.

So it’s extremely important to focus on a healthy sitting posture.

Backache

Lots of people suffer from backache. Around 80% of adults have backache at some point in their lives, 20% regularly.

There is no simple remedy for backache. Sometimes, a physiotherapist or manual therapist can help relieve the problem. Fortunately however, back users can do a lot to help themselves. They can do this by taking action, reducing the effects of certain types of backache and even preventing it.

If you slouch in a chair or on the sofa, the natural curvature of the spinal column is not supported effectively. It leads to prolonged local stresses on the back.

In the first instance, this manner of sitting puts the muscles at rest, through brief relaxation. After a while however, this sitting posture can lead to considerable problems. Problems that might eventuate include: muscle ache, pain in the joints, trapped nerves or arteries, inflammation of tissue, intestinal disorders, breathing difficulties, problems with getting up, etc.

All in all, reason enough to focus on a healthy sitting posture.
